Situated on the Duck River in the far north west of Tasmania, Smithton
appears to have been named after Police Constable Peter Smith in 1855.
Originally a port for shipping timber to the mainland Smithton is today
a busy business and primary industry centre. There are many unique features
to see in the district such as the volcanic remnant The Nut and Dismal
Swamp, the only Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) forest in the world.
